Business owners say they often lack support and advice so the HWYE competition aims to address that. Finalists from last year’s Haines Watts’ Young Entrepreneur of the Year competition met recently to discuss business challenges and solutions at a Mastermind Day, which is part of their prize.
The event took place at the Reading offices of Haines Watts and the talented young entrepreneurs gave short presentations about their businesses before sharing their biggest challenges with marketing inspirer and mentor Vanessa Lanham-Day. Vanessa is also a speaker and organiser at the HWYE competition finals.
Vanessa said, “The Mastermind event is about using the power of the group to help solve challenging issues, as well as identify the biggest opportunities on the horizon and how to exploit them to create a new – and better – business future.”
Richard and Tim Woods, joint finalists from Yomp Marketing who represented the Farnborough/Basingstoke region last year, commented: “These sorts of events are vital because it’s easy when you’re busy to neglect ‘stepping outside your business’ in order to improve it.”
Darren Chadwick, a finalist from Brite Green, a sustainability strategy consultancy, who represented the Reading area in 2016, added, “I’ve been able to share ideas and experiences with like-minded people from a range of industries and discuss different ways of tackling issues. I went away with answers to the big questions I had about how to improve the business development side and have been able to draft a plan as a result.”
Challenges arising ranged from recruitment, sales and marketing and business growth, to nurturing the right company culture.
Finalists also receive a year of free mentoring with Haines Watts’ Partners as part of their HWYE prize, along with cheques for £250 and free publicity. The overall winner, who in 2016 was Dan Greenall of Oxford Vapours, wins a total cash prize of £1000.
